Russia is a country located in Northern Eurasia. It is the largest country and has one of the most victory points. Its immediate neighbors are Mongolia, China, Kazakhstan, and Georgia in Asia and Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and Norway in Europe.
Most of its cities are concentrated on the European side of the country. Only three cities are located in Asia: Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Vladivostok. This makes the Asian side of the country difficult to defend.
Pros:
- With 10 cities it boasts a strong economic start with lots of oil and components provinces commonly spread throughout, making Local Industries ideal. (Note: This varies)
- Bordering A.I nations in the Baltics and Georgia, Azerbaijan in the Caucuses, the player can safely take these nations at the start.
- The vast terrain in the Asiatic part of Russia serves as a great eastern buffer zone for the European part of the nation (where most of its cities are located)
Cons:
- Extremely massive geographically with many of its cities spread out which can be difficult to uphold a stable morale and defense.
- Poor positioning with many bordering nations on all sides except the North which can lead to forcing the player to respond to invasions early-on or make temporary alliances.
- Many countries tend to invade Russia, due to its popularity

- In the World at War 2020 map, Russia started off with 10 cities and 146 victory points, the greatest number of cities and victory points any country started with. China and the United States followed close behind at 139 and 136 victory points, respectively. Its cities were (roughly from left to right): Archangelsk, Saint Petersburg, Moscow (its capital), Voronezh, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Vladivostok.
- Arkhangelsk used to be spelled as Archangelsk ingame. It was fixed on February 21, 2019.
- Because it is so big, the nation selection screen says Russia is best for experienced players.
